Palembang, South Sumatra Tour 3 Days

Palembang City serves as the capital city of South Sumatra province, Indonesia. With a total area of 352.51 square kilometers, this city is home to over 1.7 million inhabitants as of June 2022. Palembang is not only the second most populous and largest city in Sumatra after Medan, but also the fifth most populous city in Indonesia after Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, and Medan. Furthermore, it ranks as the nineteenth largest city in Southeast Asia. The central government has developed Palembang City and its neighboring districts, such as Banyuasin, Ogan Ilir, and Ogan Komering Ilir, as a metropolitan area in Indonesia, known as Patungraya Agung or Palembang Raya.

Palembang has a rich history as it was once the capital of the largest Buddhist maritime kingdom in Southeast Asia, the Srivijaya Kingdom, which dominated the Nusantara and the Malay Peninsula in the 9th century. This historical significance has earned the city the nickname "Bumi Sriwijaya" or "Land of Srivijaya." The discovery of the Kedukan Bukit inscription on Bukit Siguntang, located west of Palembang City, confirms the establishment of a wanua (city) on June 16, 683 AD, making Palembang the oldest city in Indonesia. In the Western world, Palembang is also known as the "Venice of the East" and "Serambi Hadramaut." The latter nickname refers to the presence of several Habaib titles, which are not found in other regions of Indonesia. Thus, Palembang holds the distinction of being the oldest city in Indonesia.
